Montgomery,AL— The William Peace University Men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 overtime win over the Hawks of Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers now improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1 in USA South play.
The Pacers would begin the game out possessing the Hawks early on. Ivan Ponce would create two chances early but one both would miss just high. The Pacers would be able to keep most of the possession in the latter half of the first half as they were able to knock the ball around the middle of the park. Danny Garcia would be inches away from giving the Pacers the lead right before halftime, as Garcia's free kick hit the top of the crossbar and went out for a Hawks goal kick. The Pacers would go into halftime tied at 0-0.
The start of the second half would see the Pacers again create scoring opportunities. The clearest goal scoring chance would come off of a cross by Jorge Aguilar to the back post which Sammy Suazo would be unable to reach. Ivan Ponce would be 1v1 with the Hawk's keeper after a great ball over the top from Jorge Aguilar but the keeper would do just enough to push Ponce out of bounds. The last chance for the Pacers in the second half would come off a free kick served to the back post for Jose Garcia who would get a clean header but Zak Heino would make a great save. The final minutes of regulation would be highly contested and physical with neither team creating a clear chance as the Pacers and Hawks would head into overtime still tied at 0.
In the overtime period the Pacers first chance would come off a long ball from Anthony Chavez to Peter Darden who would have his effort saved. The rebound would fall to Ivan Ponce who would lay it off to Alex Hernandez's favored left foot. Hernandez would stay composed in front of net and give the Pacers a 1-0 golden goal victory over Huntingdon College.
