Braves Sweep in Pacer Opening Doubleheader

The Basics:
  • Game 1: William Peace 0 UNC Pembroke 8
  • Game 2: William Peace 3 UNC Pembroke 6

  • Location: Pembroke, NC

Game 1:
  • The Braves jumped out to an early start in the first game scoring three runs in the first inning of action.
  • Candace Smith would get the bats going in the top of the fourth with a single up the middle, but the Pembroke defense would stifle the following at bats.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Braves would have one in scoring position but key pitching on the mound from Danielle Hunt would leave UNCP's Sells, stranded on third, as Hunt would strike out Alex Watkins for the third out of the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, Candice Smith and Kristina Mojica would find luck with their at-bats as Smith would be walked, and Mojica would reach on an error. The Braves defense would answer with the next at-bat fielding a double play followed by a strikeout to end the brief offensive run from the Pacers.
  • The Braves would pick up steam in the bottom of the sixth inning beginning with a homerun from Cameron Davis. Davis would be followed by consecutive big bats from the Braves and UNCP would finish the inning adding five runs to the score, and thus finishing the game with the 8-0 victory.

Pacer Top Performers for Game 1:
For the Foes for Game 1:
  • Cam Davis tallied one hit with two RBI's and one homerun.
  • Alex Watkins finished with one hit, two RBI's and two stolen bases.
  • Malerie Levner threw four strikeouts while giving up just three hits and 0 runs through 24 batters.

Game 2:
  • The Pacers would jump on the scoreboard first as Emily Puckett would be hit by a pitch and would advance to second on a wild pitch.
  • Lauren Conway would step up to the plate with a single to center field and would steal second with the next at-bat.
  • With Conway on second base, Puckett on third, and two outs, Summer Jacobs would single to left field, scoring Conway and Puckett for an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Braves would respond in the bottom of the first inning scoring five run, including another homerun from Cameron Davis. The Braves would close the inning leading, 5-2.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Emily Puckett would be hit by a pitch followed by a single to third base from Lauren Conway. Conway would advance to second as Puckett would advance to third on a throwing error. Candace Smith would fly out to right field, scoring Puckett. The Pacers would inch closer to the Braves with a 3-5 deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • The Braves would score their final run in the bottom of the fifth through timely base-running and an error from the Pacers.
  • The game would finish in seven innings in favor of the Braves, 6-3.

  • Lauren Conway would lead the Pacers with three hits in four at-bats.
  • Summer Jacobs would go 1-3 at the plate with a 2RBI single.

The Pacers are back in action on Saturday, March 2 in Montgomery, AL as they take on Huntingdon College at 12:00 p.m. This doubleheader will begin USA South Conference action for the Pacers.
