Pacers Sweep the Falcons and the Cougars in WPU Tri-Match

Raleigh, NC--- The William Peace University Volleyball team was back in action on Saturday October 5 at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. for the WPU Tri-Match. The Pacers swept Pfeiffer University in game one of the double-header 3-0, before following that up with a sweep of Averett University. The Pacers now improve to a record of 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Game One:
In set one, the Pacers jumped out to an early lead. Emerson Scollo had the first kill of the game with a big hit. Brienna Laskowski put the Pacers ahead 7-6 after giving up the lead in the first to the Falcons. The whole first set was back and forth but the Pacers would find their grove late in the set. Pfeiffer did have more kills in the first half but the Pacers found a way to get the job done. Emerson Scollo delivered the final kill to give the Pacers a 25-23 first set win and a 1-0 lead.

The second set Brienna Laskowski put the Pacers on the board first. William Peace took a big 7-3 lead but the Falcons kept the game close. William Peace had more kills in the second set. The Falcons came within one of the Pacers because of a big hit by Angelina Fardella to bring the score 20-19. Emerson Scollo and Brienna Laskowski sealed the deal in the second set and the Pacers took a two set lead. 
   
Bergin Gillespie started the Pacers off with a kill in the third set. Gillespie played great defense all day. Brienna Laskowski continued to rack up kills leading the Pacers to an early 5-2 lead. Brianna Davis had big timely kills and blocks in game one. Although the Pacer offense was rolling, the Falcons seemed to find a way back into the game in each of the three sets. Alonna Clouse and Mattie Burris had the most attempts for the Falcons. Although the Falcons were in the game in all three sets, they would fall to the Pacers 25-17 with blocks from Emerson Scollo and Paige Emore

Game Two:
Brienna Laskowski would get the Pacers on the board in the first set against the Cougars with a kill to tie it 1-1. Set one was a back-and-forth matchup as neither team gained a significant lead. Brianna Davis would tie the set 15-15 with a kill, while Emerson Scollo and Brienna Laskowski would put the Pacers up 17-15. Laskowski continued to lead the Pacers offensively and would record another kill for the Pacers to clinch set one 25-23.

The start of set two looked to be another close matchup as an ace from Brienna Laskowski would tie it up 7-7. The Pacers would then gain some momentum, scoring 6 in a row to lead 12-8. They continued to dominate, with Brienna Laskowski recording 2 aces in a row for a 22-14 lead. A kill from Emerson Scollo would finish the set 25-16 and give WPU a 2-0 lead in the match.

Scollo started the Pacers off in the third and final set, tallying two points for an early 2-0 lead. The Cougars would push back to tie it at 6 before taking a brief 10-6 lead. WPU quickly tied the set at 10. The rest of the set would continue to be close as neither team let up. A kill by Brittany Carpenter would put WPU behind by just one as the Cougars led 21-20 late in the set, and an attack error would allow the Pacers to tie it at 21. Both teams would continue to be aggressive, but a kill by Emerson Scollo would give the Pacers a 25-23 win to close the match 3-0.

  • Emma Gray Beachman collected 19 digs.

  • Lauren Montren led the Cougars with 9 kills, while McKenzie Miller had 28 assists.
  • Zamyiah Mangum led the team with 16 digs.

:
The Pacers will stay at home to play Meredith College (11-6) in a USA South conference game on October 8th, 2019. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. - head over to the Hermann Athletic Center to support your Pacers!
