Volleyball Goes 2-0 in Averett Tri-Match


Danville, VA-- The WIlliam Peace University women's volleyball team won both of their games in the Averett Tri-Match on October 26th. The Pacers defeated Pfeiffer University by a score of 3-1 before taking down Averett University by the same score. The Pacers now improve to a 19-7 overall record and a 9-4 conference record.

Game One
In the first set, WPU started off strong as they grabbed the first three points to lead 3-0. They continued to hold an edge over Pfeiffer, with a kill by Mya Parks putting them up 11-6. Jasmine Smith would give WPU a 16-9 lead with a kill, and Smith would finish the set for the Pacers with another kill to win 25-18.

Set two was initially a back-and-forth contest, with a kill by Abby Benton tying it 7-7. The Pacers then began to pull away, with a service ace from Logan Moore giving them a 12-10 advantage. They would tally 5 in a row to lead 17-11 and continued to dominate, winning the set 25-15 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Pfeiffer would push back to take a 5-2 lead. A service ace by Brienna Laskowski would give WPU an 18-15 lead, but the Falcons would tie it up at 22 before taking the last three points to win the set 25-22.

The fourth set would be tied early at 7 before the Pacers took over. A kill by Brienna Laskowski would give WPU a 15-10 lead, and Laskowski would contribute a few more points to give the Pacers a commanding 19-12 lead. Paige Emore would finish the set with a kill to give WPU a 25-15 set win and a 3-1 win in the match.

The Breakdown  The Foes
  • Bri Weber led Pfeiffer with 12 kills while Emma Gray Beacham had 37 assists.
  • Alonna Clouse had 16 digs.

Game 2
In set one, the Pacers would take an early 4-2 lead with a service ace by Mya Parks. A kill by Paige Emore would put them up 7-3, while Emerson Scollo's service ace gave WPU a 14-8 advantage. The Pacers continued to have the edge on Averett, and a service ace by Sarah Scott would seal the set 25-20.

In set two, WPU fell behind 6-3 early, but a kill from Mya Parks would tie it up 9-9. Abby Benton and Brienna Laskowski would combine to give the Pacers a 17-12 lead. A push from the Cougars would bring them within 3, but Brienna Laskowski was able to clinch the set 25-21 with a kill to give WPU a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three would prove to be a back-and-forth contest, with Mya Parks tying it up at 10. The Cougars would take a 17-12 lead, coming close to a win as they led 24-20. The Pacers continued to put the pressure on, with a kill by Abby Benton tying the set at 24. Despite a good effort, the Pacers would fall 28-26 in set three.

The Pacers started rolling in set four, with Mya Parks and Abby Benton giving WPU an early 7-2 lead. Benton's service ace would put them up 12-6, with a kill by Mya Parks bringing the score to 16-8. The Pacers would hold off a push from Averett, winning the set 25-17 and clinching the match 3-1.

The Breakdown The Foes
  • Lauren Montren had 21 kills.
  • Meg Hopkins had an impressive 44 assists.

What's Next
The Pacers will head down the road to face Meredith College on October 29th. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
