Misenheimer, NC -- The William Peace University men's soccer team defeated Pfeiffer University by a score of 2-1 in a USA South Conference match-up on October 20th. The Pacers now rise to 8-5-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the conference.
Jorge Aguilar would get the offense rolling for the Pacers as he challenged Pfeiffer keeper David Chavarria just a few minutes in.
Jose Aguirre would get an early chance at 9:25, but his shot would be blocked in front. Keeper
Dillon Garbrandt would be tested at 17:07 and 19:21 by the Falcons offense, but he was able to keep them from finding the back of the net. The Pacers continued to have the upperhand in the first half, as
Jorge Aguilar,
Ivan Ponce, and
Alex Hernandez all forced Chavarria to stand tall between the posts. Despite several good chances, the game would head into halftime tied at zero.
It wouldn't take long for the Pacers to break onto the scoresheet in the second half as
Ivan Ponce bested Chavarria to give WPU a 1-0 lead. The goal would be Ponce's 23rd career goal and would officially make him the All-Time Leading Scorer in program history. The Pacers struggled at the beginning of the second half to play out of their own half and a penalty kick opportunity by Diego Moran would find its way past
Dillon Garbrandt and tie the game at one. The Pacers continued to dominate possession, putting several shots on Chavarria before
Ivan Ponce would tally his second of the game at 85:22 with a phenomenal strike to give WPU a late 2-1 advantage. The Pacer defense did not allow the Falcons another opportunity, allowing WPU to clinch a 2-1 win.
