Volleyball Splits the Day in the Greensboro College Tri-Match

Greensboro, NC-- The William Peace University women's volleyball team split the day as they defeated Methodist University 3-1 before falling to Greensboro College 3-2. The Pacers now hold an overall record of 14-7 and a conference record of 4-4.

Game One
In set one, the Pacers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as they recorded 5 consecutive points on an ace by Brittany Carpenter and kills by Emerson Scollo and Nancy Gamewell. Methodist would grab two points before WPU went on another 5-point run to lead 10-2, with Scollo, Carpenter, and Brienna Laskowski all contributing on the offense end. The Pacers continued to control the set, with a kill by Brittany Carpenter locking it up 25-22.

Set number two saw the Pacers struggle a bit as the Monarchs jumped out to a 6-3 lead. A few attack errors allowed Methodist to hold a 12-6 advantage over WPU. A late effort by Brienna Laskowski and Nancy Gamewell would give the Pacers a 25-24 lead, but Methodist pushed back to tally the next three points and win the set 27-25.

Abby Benton gave the Pacers an early 3-1 lead in the third set with two consecutive aces. Late in the set, Jasmine Smith would keep the Pacers in the lead 18-17 with a kill. Despite a back-and-forth battle, the Pacers were able to clinch the set 25-22 on a kill by Brienna Laskowski.

In the fourth and final set, Bergin Gillespie and Paige Emore led the Pacers to a 6-2 lead. Emore, Gillespie, and Brittany Carpenter would have a few kills and an ace to tally four points in a row for a 20-14 Pacer lead. WPU was dominant in the final set, and a kill by Brienna Laskowski finished the set 25-16 and earned the Pacers a 3-1 victory over the Monarchs.

Game Two

In set one, the Pacers held a brief 3-2 lead thanks to an ace from Bergin Gillespie, but Greensboro quickly answered back to lead 8-5. Two aces from Mya Parks would bring the Pacers back in the game as they trailed 17-14, however they were unable to recover and fell 25-18 in set one.

In set two, the Pride got off to a quick start as they recorded 5 in a row to lead 5-0. The Pacers dug in to trail 10-8 with a service ace by Brienna Laskowski. They continued to push against the Pride lead, tying the set 20-20 on an attack error before tallying the last five points in the set to win 25-20.

The third set was a back-and-forth contest as a kill from Briana Davis tied it up 6-6. Neither team had an edge until a kill by Brienna Laskowski and an attack error gave WPU a 14-10 lead. The Pride would go on a late 7-point run to lead 22-19, eventually winning the set 25-23.

Jasmine Smith and Abby Benton got the Pacers rolling in the fourth set as they took a 5-1 lead. The Pride would tie it up a 12 before taking a brief 14-13 lead, but Shelby Cooper and Abby Benton would recover a 16-14 Pacer lead. The set was a close fight - a kill by Abby Benton and a few attack errors gave WPU a 25-23 set win.

The fifth and final set saw the Pacers stumble as Greensboro went unchallenged to grab the first 7 points for a 7-0 lead. A kill by Abby Benton would cut the lead in half to 12-6, but the Pacers only tallied one more point as the Pride went on to win the set 15-7 for a 3-2 win over the Pacers.
 
The Breakdown The Foes
  • Megan Andrews had 12 kills for the Monarchs in game one while Lili Henry had 17 assists.
  • Maddie Barga led the Monarchs with 20 digs in game one.
  • Sarah Egbers led the Pride with 15 kills while Dixie Fulk had 35 assists in game two.???????
  • Kayce Jo Harris tallied 36 digs in game two for Greensboro.
What's Next
The Pacers will come home for another USA South Conference matchup as they play NC Wesleyan College on October 14th. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m., so be sure to head to Hermann Athletic Center to support your Pacers!
