Volleyball Sweeps Pride on Day One of Tornado Challenge

BREVARD, N.C. -- The William Peace University volleyball team hit the road for a weekend tournament at Brevard College. In game one of the Tornado Challenge, the Pacers faced the Pride of Greensboro College. The matchup resulted in a three set win in favor of the Pacers.

Offensive Momentum
Early in the game, the Pacers got the momentum moving with a 4-0 run against the Pride. Mya Parks and McLendyn Weathersby would connect on early, momentum-driving kills to set the tone of the first set. Parks proved to be an offensive threat throughout each match against the Pride. Brienna Laskowski would begin to come alive late in the first set with four back-to-back points for the Pacers. WPU would finish set one with a ten point spread, 25-10.

Set two would prove to be a closer battle between the two teams. Attack errors were very common in this set and kept the Pride in the game. With the Pacers up 22-15, late in the second set, the Pride would make a comeback, scoring four unanswered points to come within three points from the Pacers lead. Back-to-back kills from Laskowski and Weathersby, followed by a  service ace from Laskowski would end the comeback for the Pride in set two, the Pacers would win, 25-19.

Looking for the sweep, the Pacers put up seven quick points early in the third set, sparked by two service aces from Sophie Pereira. Attacks from Parks and assists from Sarah Scott would keep the Pride at bay in the third set, leaving the Pacers victorious in the third set, 25-16.

What's Next?
The William Peace University volleyball team is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The Pacers will be facing Brevard College who will be looking to win their first game of the season facing a hot William Peace team on a two game winning streak. The Pacers will follow their first game with a final contest against Pfeiffer University at 2:00 p.m.
