Men's Soccer Ends in Draw with Lions

DEMOREST, GA -- The two top teams of the USA South faced off on Sunday afternoon, battling through two overtime periods to end in a 1-1 draw. Both teams entered the match undefeated in conference play and hold the number one position for their respective divisions of the conference.

The first half of play displayed the leveled competition between both the Pacers and the Lions. In the first half, both teams tallied three shots on goal with the Pacers finishing the period with six shots and the Lions with five. Both teams would trade possessions making several big defensive stops before lighting up the scoreboard. In the final two minutes of the first half, Alfredo Martinez would have his shot deflected towards Aaron Latigue who would then fire in the first goal of the game. The Pacers would head into halftime with the lead, 1-0.

The second half would play out similar to the first with both teams' defense getting several key stops to keep the second period scoreless up until the midway point of the period. The Lions would score their lone goal of the evening after a foul inside the box resulting in a penalty kick from Piedmont's Cameron Earls. This marked Earls 12th goal of the season. With the game tied, 1-1, the Pacers would get three more good looks at the goal before regulation ended. Oscar Aguirre sent in a close shot with five minutes remaining that was saved by Lions keeper, Blayton Duncan.

In the first overtime period, Ivan Ponce would take two back to back shots in the 93rd minute but both would miss high and wide. Earls would send one in the 96th minute but Smith would punch it out to keep both teams tied at 1-1.

The final overtime period saw both teams firing to find the back of the net at whatever costs.
