Pacers Fall to Captains in Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The William Peace University volleyball team found their first loss on the road after falling to the Captains of Christopher Newport University. The #24 ranked CNU team defeated the Pacers, three sets to zero ( 19-25, 21-25, 17-25).

Both teams proved to be fairly evenly matched to open the first set. The Captains would go on a serving streak, scoring four unanswered points to take an early, 12-6 lead. The Pacers would come out of a timeout to cut the lead to four but would continue to play catch-up to the Captains offense. A late rally from the Pacers would bring them within three, 17-20 but the Captains would surge ahead to take the first set, 25-19. Six points would be the largest point margin throughout the first set.

Set two would make for a back and forth duel between both teams. Set two would include five ties but the Pacers would not take the lead throughout the entire set despite keeping the game close. With the score tied, 14-14, the Captains would go on an 8-2 run to take a significant 22-16 lead. With set point on the line for the Captains (24-17), the Pacers would make a brief comeback beginning with a kill from Brianna Davis followed by kills from Mya Parks. Late errors from the Captains would bring the Pacers within three (24-21) before a service error from the Pacers would close set two in favor of the Captains, 25-21.

The Captains would come out swinging scoring a quick six points in set three. Two errors from the Captains and a kill from Parks would end the 6-0 run to bring the Pacers within three (3-6). The Captains would maintain a healthy lead throughout set three and would go on to win, 25-17. This game would mark the first loss for the Pacers since September 1.

What's Next?

The Pacers are back in action on Friday, September 28 for a conference tri-match at Averett University. The Pacers will open the evening with a game against USA South newcomer, Pfeiffer University at 5:00 p.m. and then will conclude the day with a game against Averett University at 7:00 p.m.
