Men's Soccer on a Roll After Defeating Cougars

DANVILLE, VA -- The William Peace University men's soccer team defeated the Cougars of Averett University in a midweek match-up in Danville, Virginia, 3-1. The Pacers improve to  a 4-0 record in conference play, adding to their best start in program history. This game also marks a four-game winning streak for WPU.

The Pacers would get things going early in the first half as Oscar Aguirre would find an early shot on goal in the first two minutes of play, into the hands of the Averett keeper. Shortly following the attack from Aguirre, Aaron Latigue would score his second goal of the season from outside the 18 into the left corner of the net in just the fifth minute of regulation. The Cougars would up their defensive pressure in the mid-field but would only slow the Pacers down for a brief moment before the Pacers would come to find their second goal of the evening. After a corner from Jorge Aguilar, Jose Garcia would redirect the ball towards Ponce for the touch in. This goal marked Ponce's seventh goal of the season, which ties Ponce for second in program history for goals in a single season.

Late in the first period, the Cougars would make a close run on their offensive attack but a big save from Pacer keeper, Jacob Smith would keep the Cougars off the board for the remainder of the first period.

In the seventh minute of play in the second half, Jorge Aguilar would find the back on a header sent in from Ivan Ponce. This tallied Aguilar's sixth goal of the season, good for sixth in program history for goals in a season. Defensive efforts from both sides of the field would stifle several close opportunities for both teams. The Cougars would jump on the scoreboard midway through the second half as Nademe Tokhli would send one from 35 feet out to the far post in the 65th minute. Despite several close attempts from both teams, the Pacer defense was able to keep the Cougars at bay for the remainder of the game to win, 3-1.
