Pacers On Eight Game Win-Streak After Defeating Fighting Squirrels and Salem Spirits

Raleigh, NC--- The William Peace University volleyball team was back in action for a home tri-match against Mary Baldwin and Salem College on Saturday afternoon. Mary Baldwin University came into this game with an overall record of (1-11) and the Pacers with a record of (6-3). Later in the afternoon, the Pacers faced Salem College who entered with an overall record of (2-5).

WPU v. MBU
In the first set of game one, McLendyn Weathersby got the ball rolling with a kill. Her presence in the Pacer offense has been making waves throughout the season. Brienna Laskowski and Madison Myers would contribute several kills to send the Pacers into an early lead (6-0) Mya Parks and Sha'Nice Frazier contributed to the later scoring in the first set where the Pacers would go on to win (25-12).

Mary Baldwin scored first in the second set, but the Pacers would answer to jump out to a 23-8 lead. Set two displayed WPU's defensive work as they held Mary Baldwin to single digit scoring. Set two would end in favor of the Pacers, 25-9.

Looking for the sweep, the Pacers headed into set three with the momentum. Despite a close match-up in the beginning of set three, Mary Baldwin would only find the lead for three possessions before the Pacers came back with avengence. Trailing, 9-5, the Pacers went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 12-9. From that point, the Pacers would not look back and would go on to win, 25-12 with a service ace from Brienna Laskowski to end the game.

  • Deborah Black had 3 kills and 3 points.
  • Milan Hunt was solid on defence with 7 digs.


WPU v. SC
The second game of the afternoon against the Spirits of Salem College would prove to be a more challenging battle for both teams. Mya Parks kicked off the Pacer scoring with back to back kills. The Pacers would jump out on top (11-5) before Salem College cut the lead to only three. With the score, 21-16, in favor of the Pacers, Salem College would go on a 4-0 run to come within two points of the Pacers. Brienna Laskowski, Sha'Nice Frazier, and Mya Parks each came up big with crucial kills to give the Pacers the win (25-20).

Set two would prove similar to set one with the Pacers jumping out to an early lead. Sophie Pereira had back to back serve ace's to give the Pacers a (19-9) lead. McLendyn Weathersby had two big kills late and would lead the Pacers to a set two victory, 25-15.

The Spirits would come alive in set three and would find their control of the game early with a 9-4 lead after eight back-to-back errors from the Pacers. The Pacers would looks to keep the game close with a late set comeback but would lose the battle to the Spirits (27-25).

Set four would be a back and forth battle between both teams as the Spirits and Pacers traded leads throughout play. Salem College battled with major attacks from Taylor Moulton, Kathryn O'Connell, and Cameron Sloop. With the game tied at 20, both teams battled to extra points with the Spirits surviving the fourth set, 26-24.

With a seven game win streak on the line for the Pacers going into the final set, the Pacers were put to the test. Big attacks from Brienna Laskowski and Mya Parks gave the Pacers momentum with the back-up of their home crowd. The Spirits would come within four but would not be able to shut down the attack from Sha'Nice Frazier and Brienna Laskowski.

The Breakdown:
  • Brienna Laskowski had 21 kills, 21 assists, and 14 digs to go along with thee aces.
  • Laskowski's 21 kills marked a career high for the sophomore.
  • Mya Parks had 14 kills.
  • Emily Braxton played outstanding defense with 25 digs.
  • Sarah Scott had 31 assists and 12 digs.
The Foes:
  • Taylor Moulton led the Spirits with 14 kills and had 17 digs.
  • Maggie Hawks led the Spirits with 28 digs.
  • Dixie Fulk had 16 assists and 11 digs.

What's Next?
The William Peace University volleyball team will be back in action on September 26 at Christopher Newport University at 7:00 p.m. The Captains have an overall record of (6-3).
