Pacers Take Down Bishops in Midweek Match-Up

CARY, N.C. -- The William Peace University men's soccer team faced the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday evening. The Pacers left the field victorious with a 1-0 win. This victory over the Bishops marks the first occasion that William Peace men's soccer has defeated North Carolina Wesleyan.

The first half got off to an aggressive start from both sides of the field. Both teams contributed a consistent offense, with the Pacers tallying eight shots in the first half, to the Bishops seven. Kieron Williams made a great run at the 44 minute mark with two back-to-back headers to maintain control of the ball down-field. Williams would sweep past one defender for a clear look at the goal and his shot would finish just high. Both teams would head into halftime nil-nil. Jacob Smith would stand strong in goal for the first half with three saves.

The second half would heat up with very physical play with both teams acquiring their fair share of fouls. Midway through the second half, fancy footwork from Pacer freshman, Ivan Ponce, would place the midfielder in scoring position inside the six. With a quick shot, the well played ball from Ponce would slip right passed the Bishop keeper's hands, for the first goal of the game at the 56 minute mark. The Pacer defense held off the Bishops on several occasions. Smith continued to be a force in net and tallied six saves on the game. The Pacers only took three shots in the second half but the lone goal from Ponce would prove to be enough to fend off the Battling Bishops.
