Baseball Clinches Berth in USA South Tournament for Second Consecutive Year

GREENSBORO, NC -- The William Peace University Baseball team swept the Pride of Greensboro College in a doubleheader to clinch a berth in the USA South Conference tournament in LaGrange, GA.

 

GAME 1

The Pacers would get the bats going early in the top of the second inning when Christian Dix scored off a sacrifice fly by Tyler Tilson and Michael Sterne scored off a throwing error made by the Pride. Dix would come to plate and drive in a run of his own  with sacrifice fly to score Easton Payton and widen the Pacers lead to 3-0 at the end of the third inning. The Pacers' offensive would continue to stretch their lead in the fourth inning, as Nathan Holt single would would drive in Tyler Tilson. An Easton Payton double scored Justin Torres. Payton would later steal third base and score on error by the catcher. This would extend the lead  to 6-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

The Pacers did not ease up, Christian Dix would again come in clutch for the Pacers with a two RBI home run. Nathan Holt would make it back to back homers with a three RBI bomb to left field increasing the Pacers lead to 10-0 heading into the sixth.

The Pacers would add four more runs in the final two innings to secure a 14-0 win.

Luke Westmoreland would be dominate on the mound for the Pacers, holding the Pride to only four hits and no runs to go along with two strikeouts.

 

GAME 2

Game two would remain scoreless through the third inning. Jake Norris would get the Pacers started with a hit to right field driving in Christian Dix to put the Pacers in front  1-0. The Pride would answer back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring 5 runs to take the lead 1-5. The Pacers would continue to battle as a steal of home plate by Justin Torres brought the score to 2-5. The Pacers would add two in the top of the sixth thanks to a Trey Hogan ground out to first scored Christian Dix and a Justin Torres RBI single drove in Tyler Tilson and bring the Pacers within one.


The Pacers would tie things up in the top of the seventh after a muffed throw which was enough for Kyle Cranmer to score and tie things up at five. The Pacers would take the lead for good  in the top of the eighth. After a single from Mikey Anerton, Justin Torres was hit by a pitch. Nathan Holt would single to left field to load the bases. Kyle Cranmer would come to pinch hit and reach on a fielder's choice as Mikey Anerton was thrown out at home. Easton Payton would come up with the bases loaded and would draw a walk would walk to score Justin Torres giving the Pacers their first lead since the third inning (6-5). Nathan Holt would score off a wild pitch by the Pride followed by a two RBI single by Alec Allred that scored Easton Payton and  Kyle Cranmer to extend the lead to 9-5. Ben Brann would hold the Pride in the last two innings with back to back one,two three innings and secure the 9-5 win for the Pacers.

 

THE BREAKDOWN

  • Nick Holt went 2-4 at the plate with four RBIs in game one.

  • Easton Payton went 3-5 with one RBI.

  • Christian Dix went 2-4 with three RBIs

  • Justin Torres went 2-4.

  • Luke Westmoreland pitched six inning, allowing four hits, no runs and two strikeouts.

  • In game two, Alec Alfred went 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

  • Kyle Cranmer was 1-2 at bat

  • Ben Brann took to the mound to pitch five inning, allowing no runs, one hit, and two strikeouts er

THE FOES

  • In game two, Scotty Mcguire went 1-2 with 2 RBIs.

  • Will Hicks pitched six inning producing 5 strikeouts.    

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Pacers will now travel to LaGrange,GA for the first round of the USA South Tournament which begins on Wednesday. We will provide game time and opponent after this weekend!
