Covenant Takes Victory in Raleigh Over Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The William Peace University men's basketball team was defeated by Covenant College on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers (4-16) fell to the Scots, 86-63. 

In the first half Covenant College scored first with a Berto Dryden jump shot. Samuel Arnold would respond with a deep three-pointer. Covenant jumped to a 7-4 lead with 16:12 remaining in the first half. The Pacers would later tie the game at 15 but it would be the last time they tied the score in the half. With the score at 21-15, in favor of the Scots, a three-pointer by Camden Ferguson would put the Pacers within two points with 10:06 remaining in the first half. Bailey Spragg led Covenant with 13 points and 5 rebounds in the first 20 minutes and Will Crumly scored 11 points and hauled in 4 rebounds. William Peace was out-rebounded by the Scots, 19-11, in the first half. 

The Scots had an efficient night from the floor, shooting 51.9% from the field. Their attack on the glass also helped their fight against the Pacers as the Scots out-rebounded the Pacers 38-28. The Scots would maintain their lead for the remainder of the game and would steal a victory on the road against WPU. The Pacers only player in double-figures was Mikal Gaylord who had 14 points. Tyson Sellers contributed 9 points and two steals. Trey Bryant battled hard with Covenant's big men and had 7 rebounds.

THE BREAKDOWN
  • Mikal Gaylord was the only Pacer in double figures with 14 points.
  • Tyson Sellers had 9 points, and Trey Bryant finished with 7 rebounds.
  • The Pacers took 31 three-point shots, only connecting on eight. 

FOR THE FOES:
  • Five Scots players scored in double figures. Bailey Spragg led the Scots with 18 points and 9 rebounds.
  • James Mitchell scored 15 points and was 50 percent from behind the arc.

The Pacers will head to Ferrum College for their next contest on February 7. Ferrum has an overall record of (4-13) and a conference record of (2-7). In their last match-up, the Pacers defeated Ferrum with a thrilling 83-80 finish. Catch the game at 7:30 p.m. with live stats and live video.
