Late Rally By Monarchs Defeats Pacers in Game 2 of Series

Raleigh, NC--The William Peace University baseball team fell to Methodist University in the second game of a three game series. The Pacers now drop to an overall record of (5-5) and a conference record of (0-2).

Methodist would lead the game 1-0 after the first inning, but the Pacers would quickly take control in the top of the second. WPU would get the bases loaded, with Easton Payton and Justin Torres both taking walks to bring home Jake Norris and Trey Hogan to lead 2-1. Christian Dix would bring in another run with a single, while Alec Allred's single to right field would add 2 RBIs for a 5-1 lead. Tyler Tilson and Jake Norris would also single to increase the Pacer lead to 7-1. The Monarchs would answer back in the bottom of the second, scoring 5 runs to trail 7-6. The Pacers added one more at the top of the third and would hold Methodist in the bottom of the third to lead 8-6.

Gavin Wheeler would score at the top of the 5th after a sacrifice fly from Justin Torres for a 9-6 Pacer lead, with the Pacers again not allowing Methodist to score in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Tilson started off the top of the 6th with a home run to earn another for WPU, with the Monarchs adding 3 runs to make the score 10-9. Justin Torres' sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th would allow Nathan Holt to score for a 11-9 WPU lead, but the Monarchs would get the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, earning 4 runs and 5 hits to lead 13-11. Methodist closed out the top of the eighth with a double play to maintain their lead, adding one more run in the bottom of the eighth to lead 14-11. In the top of the ninth, the Pacers would get runners in scoring position but were unable to convert, giving Methodist the 14-11 win.



THE BREAKDOWN
  • Tyler Tilson recorded a 1.250 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage, going 2-4 at the plate with one home run and 2 RBIs.
  • Justin Torres led the team with 3 RBIs, while Easton Payton, Jake Norris, and Nathan Holt all went 2-4 at the plate.

  • Matthias Carter went 3-5 with a 1.400 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage, while Jacob Austin went 4-4 with a 1.500 slugging percentage and 1.000 on-base percentage.
  • Will Walker closed the game out for Methodist on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a run or hit.
