Volleyball Advances to Semi-Finals of USA South Tournament

Raleigh, NC--- The William Peace University volleyball team was back in action on October 30 for the USA South Quarterfinal. After defeating N.C. Wesleyan in the first round game at 5:00 p.m., the Cougars of Averett University advanced to face the Pacers. After an impressive first set by the Pacers, the Cougars fought back, taking WPU to five sets that would end in a hard-fought victory for the Pacers.


The Pacers came out strong in set one, led by an early kill from Brienna Laskowski. The Pacers would jump out to an early lead (7-3). McLendyn Weathersby had a timely kill followed by a big hit from Sha'Nice Frazier. Averett would try to creep back but the Pacers denfense was solid in the first set. The Pacers won set one (25-14).

Averett came into set two with motivation and would take the lead (5-2), being lead by Madison Dadez. William Peace would give up crucial points allowing the Cougars to take an 18-12 lead. McLendyn Weathersby had back-to-back kills late in set two but it would not be enough for the Pacers and Averett would take set two (25-22).

Set three moved back and forth early. The Cougars would take the lead (9-7) after a big kill from Keenan Marks. Mya Parks had two big kills to keep the Pacers within reach of the lead. William Peace would tie the game at 17 after a kill from Pacer freshman, Madison Myers. Averett would charge forward to take the lead and the victory in set three.

With the season on the line, the Pacers needed to take the fourth set. They would take an early (8-4) lead.  McLendyn Weathersby fired off back-to-back kills and would push the Pacer momentum forward (21-8). Mya Parks ended the fourth set with a big kill to send the game to five sets.

William Peace came out strong and led 7-1 early thanks to two big kills from Brienna Laskowski. Commanding kills from Sha'Nice Frazier and errors from the Cougars would give the Pacers the final set win to advance the Pacers to the semi-finals of the USA South Tournament.

What's Next?
The Pacers will be back in action on Friday versus #4 Piedmont College in the semi-finals of the USA South tournament. The game will take place at Meredith College and the start time will be announced at a later date. Piedmont comes into Friday's matchup with an overall record of (15-10).
