Volleyball Rounds Up Historic Season in Semi-Finals of USA South Tournament

RALEIGH, NC - - The William Peace University volleyball team wrapped up their historic season on Friday evening in the semi-final round of the USA South Conference Volleyball Tournament. The Pacers took on the Lions of Piedmont College, the #4 seed from the west division of the conference. The Pacers took the Lions to five sets with each set proving to finish in a close spread of no more than three points. The Lions stole the victory in the fifth set with a late rally down the stretch to advance to the championship game on Saturday, and end the winning streak for the Pacers.

The Lions would jump out to a dramatic 13-4 lead in the first set. The Piedmont defense would prove strong against the Pacers attack. The Pacers would gain life late in the first set to tie the game at 18 off of a kill from Brienna Laskowski. The Pacers would take their first lead with three unanswered points to lead, 22-19. The Lions attack would takeover to earn a comeback win, 26-24 over the Pacers in set one.

Piedmont would remain in control of the second set, preventing the Pacers from taking the lead for the entire set. The Lions would hold their largest lead at 21-14. A late run by the Pacers would bring the score within three but would not be enough to overcome the Lions in set two as Piedmont would finish, 25-22.

The Pacers and Lions would trade points in the third set, as the Pacers looked to hold off the Lions from the sweep. The game would tie up at 15-15, with both teams taking advantage of errors. Three back-to-back errors from Piedmont would give the Pacers a 23-20 lead. A kill from Laskowski followed by a ball handling error by the Lions would give the Pacers their first set victory, 25-23.

Set four would look similar to set three, as WPU came out firing and took a quick 6-3 lead after kills from Brianna Davis and Mya Parks. Piedmont would answer with back-to-back service aces and shortly after take an 11-9 lead. A 4-0 run from the Pacers down the stretch would give them the 21-19 lead. Kills from Laskwoski, Davis, and Sha'Nice Frazier would fend off the Lions to send the Pacers into a final set.

Errors would plague both teams throughout the fifth set as pressure began to increase with championship goals at stake. With the set tied at 9-9, Piedmont would score off of four errors from WPU. With a 13-9 lead, the Pacers were unable to fight off the final attack from the Lions, and would fall, 15-12.

  • Tatiana Paula lead the Lions with 25 kills.
  • Jenna Wendel lead with 53 assists.
  • Lainey Choiniere tallied 36 digs.

THE CONCLUSION
The Pacers bring to a close, a historic season with a 24-6 overall record and an impressive 15-1 record in conference play, good for Co-Divisional Champions of the USA South Conference. WPU had several major recognitions throughout the season including Emily Braxton earning Libero of the Year and 2nd Team East Division. Mya Parks and Brienna Laskowski earned 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team East Division. Sha'Nice Frazier earned 1st Team East Division. The Pacers will now hang a banner in the Hermann Athletic Center and look to continue to excel n seasons to come.
