RALEIGH, N.C. -- The William Peace softball team will enter the USA South Conference Tournament as the number six seed. The Pacers will not travel far as they are matched up against cross-town rival, Meredith College, who is the number one seed in the East Division. The Pacers are riding a big wave of momentum having lost only one of their last eight games.
Coach Dobbins shared a few words on what he thinks the team needs to do to keep going the tournament. "I think the biggest factor is our offense, we are hitting the ball extremely well over the last eight games. The most important part of that is we're getting production up and down the lineup from everyone and this takes so much pressure off of our pitching staff and our defense."Obviously we have to hit the ball better than we did the first time. Their pitching staff is legit and will be a great challenge for us.We also have to do better defensively than we did last game. They got to every 50/50 ball and made a play, where we were not productive in that category." Sophomore standout, Kelsey Durham, also has had the hot hand in the circle and will be key in Saturday's match ups. Going into this weekend's series Durham has only given up one run in her last five outings.
Dobbins expressed, "I think one of the factors that most people don't realize, is that every game we're starting between 6 to 7 freshman and sophomores." Many of which have been putting in great performances for the Pacers. "Jordan Criswell and Madison Tucker have been hitting the ball very well. Jordan Mangum Cheyenne Colburn have been stellar on defense."
Courtney Barbour has been managing the Pitching staff all year and has been key to the staffs success. The Pacers will also look to Lindsey Wiggins and Heather McLean who are among the best hitters in the nation and have been an outstanding one-two punch in the lineup and will play big roles in the opening round of the tournament.
"The other thing is, we need to turn this into a home game with a big WPU Pacer crowd attending. We need the whole team to do this, let's get Pacer Nation over to Meredith on Saturday and win 2 ball games," shared Dobbins.
Go out and support the Lady Pacers this weekend at Meredith. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. followed by the second game at 3:00 p.m.
