Pacers split hard fought doubleheader against Ferrum College

RALEIGH, NC -- The William Peace Softball team returned to the diamond on saturday for their last doubleheader of the weekend. Both games featured exciting back and forth action on both sides of the ball from both teams.

Game 1

The Panthers scored all of their runs in the first two innings of the contest. In the first, a Jordan Hamlet RBI single got the Panthers on the board. Amber Coffin would follow up with an RBI single of her own to drive in another run. The Pacers would answer right back in a big way in the bottom of the first, with a  Heather McLean three run bomb over the right field fence. This would give the Pacers a 3-2 lead heading into the second. The game would continue to go back and forth in the second where the Panthers tacked on five runs off some big hits. Ferrum would go into the bottom of the inning up 7-3. The Pacers would cut the lead in the bottom of the fifth when  Kacy Haithcock hit a shot to center where the centerfielder missed played the ball and Haithcock ended up on third and Heather McLean scored, making it 7-4. The Panthers pitching staff would go on and keep the Pacers off the board for the rest of the game and giving the Panthers a 7-4 win.

Game 2

Game two picked up right where game one left off with both teams swinging hot bats and it made for a high scoring back and forth affair between the two. The Panthers would get on the board first again with two runs in the top of the first. The Pacers would score one in the bottom of the inning off of a  Kelsey Durham double that scored  Lindsey Wiggins. Ferrum would tack on another run in the third off of a wild pitch. Heather McLean would add to her impressive day in the third with a sac fly that scored Jordan Mangum. Another Kelsey Durham double would tie the game at three in the third. In the fifth the Pacers would pull away courtesy of Heather McLean's conference leading seventh home run of the season, which drove in

Taylor Byrd and Jordan Mangum. Going into the the sixth the Pacers were up 6-3 before the Panthers answered right back with a double off the centerfield fence that drove in two bringing the Panthers within one. In the bottom of the sixth the Pacers kept the bats hot and added four more runs, scoring three off of two Panther errors and a fourth off Heather McLean RBI single. The game was close all the way until the final out. The Pacers were leading 10-5 going into the final inning where the Panthers came within two off errors from the Pacers. The Panthers comeback bid fell short as Fr. pitcher  Courtney Smith held the lead for the Pacers.  Liliana Berber picked up the win for the Pacers going five innings, while allowing five earned runs, with four strikeouts and seven walks. Final score 10-8 in favor of William Peace.

The Pacers will return to action on Wednesday away at Meredith College for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
