Pacers Split Double-Header With Knights

CARY, N.C. -- The William Peace University baseball team split a double-header on Saturday with Southern Virginia. The Pacers took the first game, 5-2, while the Knights won the final game, 5-1.

"Today was a little disappointing," head coach Chris Duty said. "We just had too many errors in both games and our defense let the game get away from us. We're still 2-1 and I'm looking forward to a great rest of the season.'

William Peace split the three-game series with Southern Virginia, 2-1.

GAME 1
The Pacer pitchers combined for a two-hitter against Southern Virginia in game one. The Pacers got some help in the second inning with an error that allowed Mikey Anerton to score. The team tacked on another run in the third when Nathan Holt pulled a bunt down the third-base line to lead off the inning. Holt then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the Knights. A sacrafice bunt by Easton Payton moved Holt to third and a ground out by Sean Finneran scored Holt.

The game went quiet for a few innings, but an error in the fifth inning allowed the Knights to pick up a run. The knights picked up their second run in the fifth with a double that scored the runner who reached on error to tie the game at 2-2. The Pacers quickly shot back in the fifth with a lead-off double by Holt. Payton earned a walk and Finneran shot a single into left that scored Holt. A fielder's choice by Alec Allred moved Payton to third base and he scored on a wild pitch. Alex Scott singled to bring Allred in, bringing the score to 5-2.

Cameron High pitched five innings and struck out six while giving up just two hits and no earned runs. Chase Roupp and Luke Westmoreland came in for an inning each without allowing a hit and Westmoreland picked up his second save of the season.

GAME 2
The Pacers were the first to get on the board in the first inning. Alec Allred hit a line drive to right center to get on base and Alex Scott's double drove Allred in. That would be the Pacers only run in the game however.

A few too many mistakes in the third and fourth innings allowed Southern Virginia to score five total runs. The Pacers had a couple errors, a few walked batters and gave up several hits in the innings that allowed Southern Virginia to take a 5-1 lead that the Pacers were unable to overcome.

UP NEXT
