Women's Basketball Loses Tough Battle to Bears

RALEIGH, N.C -- The WPU women's basketball team battled hard against Shaw University on Wednesday night. The Bears managed to steal the win in the fourth quarter with the final score being 81-70.

In the first quarter, the Pacers took off to control the lead, keeping a five-point margin in between the Bears of Shaw University. Two back-to-back steals by Whitney Walker and DeJah Cheatham would turn into fast-break points to bring the first quarter to a close with the Pacers up, 24-19. The Pacers continued to fend off the Bears keeping a consistent lead heading into half-time, 35-30. Sophomore, Mikayla Ray headed into the break with 12 rebounds, seven points, two blocks, and two steals.

The third quarter would bring a fiery Shaw team as they would go on a six point run to close the gap to only trail the Pacers by two heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears opened up the fourth quarter applying pressure at the top of the key which would cause 10 turnovers in the final 10 minutes of play. The Bears capitalized on the momentum switch and gained their first lead with eight minutes to go in regulation. The Bears would control the remainder of the game and expand their lead to 74-64 with two minutes left to play. A lay-up by Mikayla Ray would cut the margin to eight but the Bears did not let up on their pressure and would take the victory with a final score of 81-70.

Sophomore Mikayla Ray ended the night with a double-double having 21 points, four blocks, two steals, and 14 rebounds. Junior Whitney Walker contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds.

The women's basketball team will take a brief break in play to finish up their final exams before taking on the Quakers of Guilford College. In their meeting last season, the Pacers stole a win on the road against an undefeated Quaker basketball team. This season, the Quakers are currently on a four-game winning streak and will face Oglethorpe and Virginia Wesleyan before taking on the Pacers. The game will be played on December 17 in Raleigh at 2:00 p.m.
