Pacers Fall to Quakers

Raleigh, N.C. -- The William Peace University women's basketball team fell to Guilford College 74-55 on December 17. Despite a closely fought first half, the deep bench of the Quakers would help propel Guilford to victory.

In the first quarter, Jayde Grant would put up the first Pacer points, and Dejah Cheatham would add another two with a jumper at 9:09 for a 4-2 lead. However, Guilford would quickly take back the lead, holding a 10-point (18-8) advantage over WPU at 3:41. Jayde Grant and Mikayla Ray battled back at the end of the first quarter for the Pacers, both with consecutive layups to send WPU into the 2nd quarter trailing the Quakers 22-17.

Grant and Ray continued to add points in the second quarter for a brief 23-22 Pacer lead at 7:29, but the Quakers fought back offensively, attaining a 38-26 lead with 2:43 left in the 2nd quarter. WPU went into halftime down 40-29.

In the third quarter, the Quakers maintained their offensive advantage. WPU would get within nine points at the eight minute mark, but after that, Guilford would not allow the Pacers within less than ten points of the lead, eventually going into the 4th quarter with a 61-44 lead.

Guilford continued to lead in the fourth, taking their largest lead (74-50) of the game at 1:30. Deja Umstead and Jayde Grant would add a few last minute points for WPU, but the Pacers fell to the Quakers 74-55.

 

THE BREAK DOWN

  • Mikayla Ray notched her fifth double-double on the season, with a game high 11 rebounds and 16 points. While also adding three blocks.

  • Jayde Grant led the team in points and steals, with 19 and 4 respectively.

  • Both teams struggled with turnovers; The Pacers had 23 while the Quakers tallied 22.

FOR THE FOES

  • Miracle Walters led the Quakers with a game high 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. She also shot 6-6 from the line.

  • Kendyl Medlin added 15 points and 4 rebounds, while Monell Dunlap had 10 points and 6 rebounds for the game.

  • Guilford out-rebounded WPU with 52 rebounds to 30.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Pacers (1-5) now head into the holiday break before coming back on January 3, 2018 to face Ferrum College in a USA South Conference match-up. Ferrum is currently (3-4) overall and (2-0) in the conference. The game against Ferrum will take place in Ferrum, Virginia at 5:30 p.m.
