Men's Basketball Falls to Wasps in High-Scoring Match-Up

Raleigh, N.C. -- The William Peace University men's basketball team faced off against Emory & Henry University in a challenging game on Saturday afternoon. The November 23 match-up resulted in a 83-98 loss for the Pacers.

The Pacers won the face off and took the first shot, but Emory managed to grab the first points of the game scoring two. The Pacers, Paul Dunlap, quickly responded with a layup tying the game. From there the Pacers jumped ahead making the score 10-6. Unfortunately in the 14th minute the Pacers lost their lead and were unable to keep up with a motivated Emory and Henry team. The Pacers managed to get  points with 11 minutes left on the clock with a layup from Trey Bryant making the score 15-26 which gave the Pacers momentum as a three-pointer from Joshua Jones followed by another three from Camden Ferguson pushed the Pacers to only trail 13. The Pacers first half ended with a 36-51 score with them holding a 87.5% free throw accuracy and winning rebounds 17-13 over the Wasps. John Burwell was the Pacers impact player of the game putting up 14 points and 6 assists in the first half.

The Pacers entered the second half strong drawing a foul and getting the first points of the second by free throws from Joshua Jones. Emory & Henry responded with a three, but the Pacers came back quickly with a jump shot by John Burwell. From there the Pacers pressured the Wasps and got two fast break lay ups by Trey Bryant and John Burwell as well as a dunk by Kori Anderson with 15 on the clock putting the score at 52-62. Due to an aggressive Emory & Henry defense, Kori Anderson managed to was able to draw several fouls in the paint while also sinking his foul shots. Nearing the end of the game, the Pacers were giving all they had and closed the gap with two crucial, back-to-back three pointers by #44 Paul Dunlap, along with contributions from Burwell and Bryant would put the Pacers just five points behind the Wasps.  Unfortunately, the Pacers were unable to catch Emory and Henry  resulting in an 83 -98 loss.

John Burwell led the team in total points with 27 followed by Trey Bryant who had 20.

The Pacers (1-3) now look ahead to November 29, when they will take on NC Wesleyan College at home at 7:30 p.m.
