The WPU men's basketball team fell to Roanoke College on Tuesday, November 21st in Salem, VA 70-53. The game came a day after the Pacers defeated Hampden-Sydney College 89-70 at home. The Pacers now drop to a record of (1-2)
The first half was a strong defensive match-up. The Maroons were leading 7-6 at 14:59. Tyson Sellers would make two shots from behind the arc at 14:46 and 14:16 to give the Pacers a 12-7 lead. Joshua Jones followed Sellers with his own 3-pointer to give WPU a 6-point lead (15-9) with 8:55 left on the clock. Roanoke would tie up the game 15-15 before WPU could take control again. The Pacers led 22-18 after a jump shot from Camden Ferguson at 4:37, but Roanoke then went on a 12-point run to head into halftime with a 30-22 lead.
The Maroons ran away with the game in the second half, grabbing a 53-26 point lead over the Pacers in a 22-4 run. Trey Bryant would break Roanoke's run with two consecutive layups, while Paul Dunlap also added 2 points at 12:35 as WPU trailed 53-30. Near the end of the second half, the Pacers cut Roanoke's lead down to 14 points, but they could not close the gap. Turnovers proved to be a problem for WPU, as they totaled 20 in comparison to Roanoke's 8.
Trey Bryant continued to lead the team offensively with 14 points, while Tyson Sellers was not far behind him with 10 points. Paul Dunlap had 7 rebounds for the game, with Camden Ferguson and Maurice Canady not far behind with 6 apiece.
WPU will now look ahead to November 25th, where they will play Emory & Henry College at 3 p.m for a home game. The game will take place in Raleigh, NC at the Hermann Athletic Center. Emory & Henry is currently 2-0 after recently winning in overtime 98-91 over Maryville.
