LYNCHBURG, VA – The William Peace University women's soccer team traveled to Randolph College Tuesday night, where the Pacers battled the Wildcats to a scoreless draw in double-overtime.
After a tightly contested, 1-0 loss at the hands of Randolph last season, the Pacers (0-2-1) were well aware of what to expect going into the evening. WPU was outshot, 22-3, and Randolph held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks, but the defense stayed organized and
Shannon Maddex saved all 10 shots that the Wildcats (0-1-1) put on target.
Amelia Melching, Caylin Yarborough and
Katie Hodges each recorded a shot, while
Alyssa Gasperini also returned to the pitch after missing the team's first two matches of the season.
"For the first time all year, we put together an entire 90 minutes and then some. Everyone dug down deep, grinded out the result, and so I'm really proud of the effort tonight" said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "Shannon was great in goal and our backline was outstanding. We were able to get Alyssa back on the field, Katie performed well moving to attacking mid today, we got solid play from Caylin and Amelia on the flank, and most importantly, we all played 110 minutes for each other."
The WPU women's soccer team will be back in action at WakeMed Soccer Park Saturday at 2:00 p.m., hosting the Vixens of Sweet Briar College. The Pacers turn around the next day at home when they face the Warren Wilson Owls at noon.
