CARY, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back at WakeMed Soccer Park this afternoon, where the Pacers picked up their first win of the season against the Vixens of Sweet Briar College by the final score of 2-1.
Despite a one-goal margin of victory, the final score wasn't necessarily indicative of how the match went. The Pacers (1-2-1) had Sweet Briar on their heels the entire game, outshooting the Vixens, 25-2, while holding a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Sweet Briar (0-3) struck first in the 10th minute. Des'rae Davis scored with the help of Alexa Dahlin, but it was all Pacers from there. In the 15th,
Alyssa Gasperini found
Ashley Johnson, who floated one high in the air from well beyond the 18-yard box and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Lauren Lane scored for the second time this year, making it 2-1 right before half on an assist from
Ashley Piers.
"Obviously, we're pleased to pick up our first win of the season. We've been fighting to get that for a couple of games now, so it was a good day for us" said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "I thought we really did a better job of possessing the ball, and that led to the offensive production today that we've been lacking. We had a lot more opportunities around the net which was a positive for us."
The WPU women's soccer team turns around on short rest Sunday, hosting the Owls of Warren Wilson College at noon.
