DANVILLE, VA – The William Peace University volleyball team kicked off day one of Averett University's Cougar Classic on Saturday with matches against Frostburg State and Salve Regina.  The Pacers dropped their first match against Frostburg State, 3-1, but bounced back in the afternoon with a 3-0 win over Salve Regina.

The Pacers came out strong with a 25-19 win in the opening set against Frostburg State, but the bobcats went on to take the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16.

Laura Bland finished with a double-double of 12 kills, 14 digs and two service aces, while Mya Parks led the Pacers with 14 kills and six digs. Tempestt Frazier added nine kills, three block solos and a block assist. Liana Solomon dished out 34 assists along with nine digs, two service aces, a pair of assists and a block assist. Carson Williams posted a team high 15 digs.

It was a well-rounded attack from Frostburg State (1-2), who controlled the end line with 13 service aces compared to only six for the Pacers. Naya Cheatem led the Bobcats with 14 kills, six digs and two service aces. Zoe Harris and Karli Grimes added eight kills apiece.

In their second match of the day, the Pacers set the tone with a 25-11 win in the first set and kept their foot on the gas, finishing off Salve Regina (1-1) by scores of 25-23 and 25-19.

Due to limited staffing with matches being played on two courts and multiple events at Averett this weekend, a full box score will be available online tomorrow.

The WPU volleyball team closes out the classic with two more matches on Sunday, starting with Guilford College at 11:00 a.m. The Pacers square off against Roanoke College at 3:30 p.m.

Live stats will be available for both contests.
