CARY, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting the Quakers of Guilford College in their home opener. The Pacers (0-2) struggled to manufacture any offense with only one shot in the second half, falling by the final score of 2-0.
Juliana Evans-Anfom struck first for Guilford (1-0) less than three minutes in, as she appeared to be crossing the ball into a teammate but it ended up in the back of the net. Kelsey Reilly gave the Quakers a 2-0 lead in the 66th minute off a penalty kick.
Shannon Maddex saved the penalty shot, but Reilly corralled the rebound and tucked it past the outstretched arms of Maddex.
Maddex notched five saves in the contest. The Quakers took 11 shots, seven of which were on target, to go along with five corner kicks.
"I thought overall it was the best game we've played so far. We put together 30 to 35 minutes each half where we did some good things but just still haven't been able to put together a full 90 minutes," said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "It's the little mistakes that are hurting us right now. We're defending well in the back, but we just haven't been able to generate any offense, which is something we'll continue to work on in the coming weeks."
The WPU women's soccer team returns to the pitch next Tuesday, Sept. 6 when they travel to take on Randolph College at 6:30 p.m.
