STAUNTON, VA – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back in action Sunday afternoon, bouncing back for a record-setting 10-0 win against the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin.
WPU improves to 2-6-1 and 1-3 in the USA South, while Mary Baldwin falls to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in conference. The Pacers pitched their second shutout of the season, and their 10 goals equal a program record.
Amelia Melching struck first in the eighth minute for her first goal of the season with the help of
Janae Mays.
Kayla Bray scored her first career goal as a Pacer 10 minutes later, and then Mays broke through for the first time this year in the 37th to make it 3-0 before the break.
The Pacers poured it on in the second half, beginning in the 55th with
Caylin Yarbrough's second goal of the season.
Sarah Marshburn found Melching for another score in the 73rd, followed by
Nicki Thompson's first goal of the season only a couple minutes later.
Stephanie Arnold connected with her sister
Amber Arnold in the 77th and then dished out another assist to
Ashley Piers in the 79th which were the first career goals for both senior defenders. Stephanie capped things off with two goals of her own in the 84th and 90th minutes.
The WPU women's soccer team returns to WakeMed Soccer Park this Wednesday, September 28 at 3:30 p.m. against the Greensboro College Pride.
