CARY, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back at WakeMed Soccer Park Sunday afternoon, where the Pacers fell to the Cougars of Averett University, 4-0.
The Pacers (1-5-1, 0-2 USAS) came out strong in the first half, and
Caylin Yarbrough nearly put them ahead with a shot off the crossbar in the 11th minute.
Shannon Maddex saved a penalty kick a few minutes later, but Skye Gunn put Averett (4-1, 2-0 USAS) up 1-0 with a goal in the 28th.
WPU was a bit unlucky in the 57th when Katie Abelseth floated a cross into the box that ended up in the back of the net. Gunn added her second goal of the game in the 70th though with help from Annalies Jobsis, and then Kaitlyn Barbour scored 16 seconds later to give the Cougars a 4-0 edge.
"Today and yesterday I thought we played some of our best soccer we've played all year. We've had stretches where we're doing things offensively that we want to do, so you can't be upset with that kind of play when you're doing positive things." said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "We were very competitive, and I don't think the score was indicative of how close the match really was today. We'll have a day off, try to retool and get ready to go next week.
The WPU women's soccer team returns to WakeMed this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:00 p.m. against the Pride of Greensboro College.
