LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA – Following a 2-0 loss to Piedmont in their USA South opener yesterday, the William Peace University men's soccer team was back at it Saturday afternoon for another conference match against Covenant College. The Pacers were shutout for a second straight day, as the Scots held on to win, 1-0.
"We came out flat on Friday and Piedmont punished us for it. We played much better today, generating some great goal scoring opportunities, but we couldn't put one away and it cost us," said head coach
Caleb Husmann. "We've been on the road for the majority of the season so far though, and we have a long stretch of home games coming up, so I think we're set up nicely to get back on track.
It was a physical affair with five yellow cards shown during the game. The Pacers (3-3-1, 0-2 USAS) were outshot 17-8 without two of their leading goal scorers,
Tanielu Riley and
Ja'Rod Randolph. The Scots (1-4-1, 1-1 USAS) also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Carl Simakoff scored the only goal of the day in the 43rd minute, heading in Caleb Allen's free kick.
The WPU men's soccer team is back at WakeMed Soccer Park this Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a 6:00 p.m. match against Emory & Henry.
