STAUNTON, VA – The William Peace University softball team swept Mary Baldwin this afternoon, starting with a 14-0 win followed by an 8-2 win in game two.
Game One: William Peace 14, Mary Baldwin 0WPU tied their season high with 17 hits, nine of which came in a 10-run fourth inning, as they went on to win game one, 14-0.
The Pacers hit three home runs, and seven different players recorded multiple hits.
Shay Poteat and
Morgan Bryant both went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Poteat drove in two runs, while Bryant drove home another.
Lindsey Wiggins and
Heather McLean both homered in the first. Wiggins led the game off with her fifth of the year and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. McLean also finished 2-for-3, scored twice and knocked in three with her second homer this spring.
Brittany Propri added two hits, two runs and three RBIs. She hit her USA South leading seventh of the year in the fourth.
Caroline Womble added two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs, while
Morgan Farmer also had two hits and scored twice.
Lindsey Coley chipped in with an RBI single in the fourth and eventually scored.
Farmer (8-1) notched her conference leading eighth win of the year, holding Mary Baldwin to a single hit and striking out seven in four innings of work before
Kim Cook struck out the side in the fifth.
Janie Brothers
(1-3) was pinned with the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits, five walks and a strikeout in 4.1 innings. Katie Dickinson gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on eight hits in the final two-and-a-third.
Game Two: William Peace 8, Mary Baldwin 2The Pacers (13-5, 3-1 USAS) scored six in the fourth and Cook (2-0) picked up where she left off, earning the win with a complete game effort. She gave up two runs on six hits and struck out three.
Propri finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. McLean had herself a day with two more hits, a run and three runs batted in. Womble recorded two more hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Farmer also collected two hits and scored a run.
Olivia Compton was tacked with the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks. Brothers held WPU scoreless the rest of the way.
Morgan Tully and Kayla Wheeler provided the offense for Mary Baldwin (2-6, 0-4 USAS). Tully went 3-for-3 and homered in the fourth. Wheeler plated Tully with an RBI double in the sixth as part of a 2-for-3 game.
The WPU softball team is back in Raleigh on Saturday for two games against Greensboro College. The Pacers travel to face North Carolina Wesleyan the next day.
