FERRUM, VA – The William Peace University softball team traveled to Ferrum College for their USA South opener Saturday afternoon. After a 7-4 loss in game one, the Pacers bounced back to split with a 9-4 win in game two.
Game One: Ferrum 7, William Peace 4WPU showed signs of life with three runs in the fifth, but the Pacers couldn't climb out of the 7-0 hole they dug themselves through three innings, on their way to a 7-4 loss.
Five different Pacers collected one hit apiece.
Kelsey Durham (3-4) was pinned with the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits, three walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Courtney Rudd (3-0) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Logan Barbour and Cheyenne Strickland paced the Panthers offensively. They both finished 2-for-3, scored twice, and drove in a pair.
Game Two: William Peace 9, Ferrum 4The Pacers (11-5, 1-1 USAS) looked more themselves in game two, bouncing back for a 9-4 win thanks in large part to home runs from
Brittany Propri and
Heather McLean.
Propri hit her sixth of the year in the top of the first; a two-run shot that scored
Lindsey Wiggins for RBIs number 22 and 23 this season. Propri leads the USA South and came into the weekend tied for the national lead in home runs and runs batted in. Wiggins leads the conference in hits, runs, and doubles after a 3-for-3 game with three runs and an RBI.
Heather McLean put the game away in the top of the seventh with a three-run homer that give WPU a 9-4 lead. Propri was plunked and
Morgan Farmer singled to reach base ahead of McLean.
Farmer finished the game with three hits and improved her record in the circle to 7-1, which ranks her first in the USA South for wins. She went the distance for the sixth time this season, giving up four runs on 12 hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Amanda Roberts (1-2) was tacked with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in two innings of work. Eight different players for Ferrum (4-2, 1-1 USAS) recorded a hit.
The WPU softball team is back in action Sunday afternoon for two more conference games at Mary Baldwin starting at 12:00 p.m.
