RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University softball team hosted Covenant College for their annual Strikeout Cancer Doubleheader this afternoon. The Pacers took game one, 7-4, before finishing off the sweep in dramatic fashion, erasing a three-run deficit in the seventh to beat the Scots, 4-3.

The Pacers are off to their best start in program history, improving to 21-9 overall with a 10-4 mark in the USA South and 10 more regular season games to go. Most importantly, the Pacers helped raise over $700 for breast cancer patients and the Pretty in Pink Foundation.

Game One: William Peace 7, Covenant 4
Covenant plated four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead, but the Pacers scored twice in the bottom half of the third and fourth innings on their way to a 7-4 win.

Three Pacers registered multiple hits, including Heather McLean, who went 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored.  Caroline Womble finished 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored, while Lindsey Coley added two hits and scored twice. Lindsey Wiggins came up with the bases juiced in the second and cleared the bases with a double off the left field fence. Wiggins finished with four RBIs, drawing a bases loaded walk in the third.

Morgan Farmer (12-3) went the distance for a league leading 12th time to earn the win. Her 12 wins is also tied for top in the conference. Farmer pitched well minus the fourth inning, allowing four runs on seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Cris Gant (3-4) was pinned with the loss, giving up seven runs on eight hits, eight walks and eight strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Morgan Lane did most of the most of the damage for the Scots with a three-run homer in the third. Shannon Schmitt followed Lane's homer with a single and scored on Madison Quirk's RBI triple.

Game Two: William Peace 4, Covenant 3
Trailing 3-0 and down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, WPU rallied to score four runs, pulling off an improbable come-from-behind win, 4-3.

With two outs and the bases empty, Morgan Bryant and Kaci Haithcock kept things alive with a pair of walks. Katelyn McLamb ripped a line drive up the middle that got past the centerfielder and all the way to the fence. Bryant and Haithcock both came home, while McLamb ended up on third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three. Wiggins was hit by a pitch and came all the way around to score the game winner, as Farmer roped a walk-off double off the center field fence.

Kim Cook picked up her fifth win of the season in relief of starter Kelsey Durham, who gave up an unearned run on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts in three inning. Cook worked the final four frames, allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Kat Andrews (0-1) had the Pacers completely off-balance at the plate until the wheels fell off in the seventh. She went the distance and gave up four runs on six hits, four walks and two strikeouts.

Jordan Brett and Joni Johnson led the Scots (11-12-1, 3-9 USAS) offensively with two hits apiece. Johnson drove in a pair with RBI singles in the second and sixth innings, while Brett added an RBI single in the fourth.

The WPU softball team is back in action for a pair of road conference doubleheaders this week. The Pacers face Methodist on Tuesday followed by two more at North Carolina Wesleyan Wednesday.
