Baseball Drops Final Two at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The William Peace University baseball team was back in Fayetteville Sunday afternoon for games two and three of their three-game set against Methodist. The Pacers dropped both of them by scores of 8-3 and 9-5.

Game One: Methodist 8, William Peace 3
WPU had just as many hits as the Monarchs did, but the Pacers left twice as many runners on base, as Methodist plated runs in each of the first six innings on their way to an 8-3 win.

The first five hits for WPU recorded at least one hit, including Easton Payton, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI double in the ninth that scored Brian Willis. Trey Hogan and Alex Scott both notched two hits apiece. Hogan scored in the third on Scott's RBI single. Mikey Anerton added a hit and scored a run, while Tyler Klinedinst also chipped in with a hit.

Christian Neal (2-2) was tacked with the loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Kyle Vincent and Zach Geller threw scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth.

Tyler Hardee (3-1) went seven innings to earn the win, surrendering two runs on eight hits.

Alex Rodriguez, Pete Wildeboer and Colin Ford finished with three hits apiece. Rodriguez scored twice and drove in three. Wildeboer scored and drove in another. Ford scored all three times he reached.

Game Two: Methodist 9, William Peace 5
WPU (8-16, 1-8 USAS) tied the game at five in the top of the eighth, but they unraveled in the bottom half of the inning with three errors that led to four Methodist runs. The Pacers committed five errors in the game. Seven of the Monarch's nine runs were unearned.

Hogan was the only Pacer with multiple hits and scored in the fifth after a leadoff triple. Scott brought him home with a double and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Klinedinst, his second of the game. Klinedinst drove Greg Chauvin home in the first with a base hit the other way. Derek Beale and Nick Cole both registered a hit and scored. Anerton also added a hit and an RBI.

Wes Dumford and Chase Roupp both tossed three innings but didn't factor into the decision followed by Aron Crumb in the seventh.  Mike Sgroi (1-2) entered the game in the eighth and ended up taking the loss, allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits and a walk.

Ross Leggett started for Methodist (14-7, 6-3 USAS) and worked the first five innings in a no decision. Seth Beard (2-1) picked up the win, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks and four strikeouts in the final four frames.

Stephen Nalls went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in another. Davis Cass went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Ford went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

The WPU baseball team hits the road against this weekend for a three-game set at Covenant, starting with a Friday doubleheader at noon. Game three is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
