CARY, NC – The William Peace University baseball team snapped a three-game skid with a pair of wins over Wabash College Saturday afternoon. In game one, the Pacers came back to beat Wabash in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4, before cruising to an 8-0 win in game two.
Game One: William Peace 5, Wabash 4Wabash scored a run to go ahead 4-3 in the top of the ninth, but the Pacers answered with two in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-4 win.
Easton Payton tied things up with an RBI triple, as
Brian Willis came around to score after singling with one out.
Mikey Anerton came up next and delivered a walk-off base hit the other way that brought Payton home.
Payton led the Pacers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Nick Cole went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Willis finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Zach Geller (1-0) pitched the top of the ninth to earn his first win of the season.
Alex Scott started on the mound and gave up three earned on five hits, a walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Aron crumb tossed a perfect sixth inning followed by two scoreless frames from
Mike Sgroi.
Ryan Thomas (0-1) was pinned with the loss, retiring only one batter after replacing Wabash starter Jensen Kirch in the ninth. Kirsch allowed two earned and struck out nine.
Sean Roginski was the only Little Giant with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with a run batted in.
Game Two: William Peace 8, Wabash 0The Pacers scored two in the first and three more in the second, which was more than enough for
Trevor Pence (1-2), who tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout, holding Wabash to four hits and striking out six.
Payton and Anerton set the table once again at the top of the lineup. Payton went 2-for-4 with another triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Anerton also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Nick Cole and
Cullen Cicotte added two hits apiece. Cole also knocked in a pair, while Cicotte drove in another.
Bryan Roberts (0-1) was tacked with the loss but didn't get much help from his defense, as the Little Giants committed three errors. Roberts gave up six runs, only three of which were earned, on six hits, a walk and a strikeout in five innings pitched.
The Pacers will go for the series sweep Sunday at 12:00 p.m. back at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
