Softball Weathers Rowan Rally to Secure Split

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University softball team hosted #9 Rowan University Friday afternoon. After a 3-1 loss in game one, the Pacers bounced back with an 8-7 win in game two.

Game One: Rowan 3, William Peace 1
The Pacers scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the seventh, which would have tied it up if it weren't for a costly error they committed in the top of the sixth. The error led to a pair of unearned runs and to a 3-1 loss in game one.

WPU loaded them up in the first and the fifth innings, but they came away empty both times.  The Pacers left eight on base in total.

Lindsey Wiggins and Caroline Womble both contributed a pair of hits at the top of the lineup. Wiggins Doubled and came around to score on a base hit from Womble. Morgan Farmer had the other Pacers hit in the bottom of the first.

Once again, Freshman Kelsey Durham (1-3) put forth an impressive performance against one of the top teams in the country and came away with nothing to show for it. She tossed another complete game, giving up one earned run on seven hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Durham has given up one earned run in 14 innings this week against #12 Christopher Newport and the ninth ranked Profs.

Allison Nolan (1-0) earned the victory in relief of starter Beth Ann Hyland. Nolan worked the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits and two strikeouts.

Shilah Snead was the only player for Rowan with multiple hits. She went 2-for-2 with a solo blast in the sixth. She also drew a pair of walks.

Game Two: William Peace 8, Rowan 7
The Pacers scored four runs in each of the first two innings and held on to survive a three-run Rowan rally in the seventh to win, 8-7.

Heather McLean and Shay Poteat both finished the game 2-for-for with two runs scored and two RBIs. Morgan Bryant added two hits and two RBIs, while Brittany Propri also contributed two hits and scored a run. Durham collected a hit and drove two in. Farmer recorded a hit and scored twice.

Farmer (4-1) picked up her fourth win of the season, giving up six runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Durham came in the seventh and picked up her first career save.

Ashley Lesch (0-1) was pinned with the loss, as she allowed six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of work. Nicole Paiotti led Rowan at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The WPU softball team will be back in action this weekend for the 10th annual Grand Slam Triangle Classic starting with games against New York University and McDaniel College at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
