Pacers Start Grand Slam Triangle Classic 2-0

CARY, NC – The William Peace University softball team got off to a 2-0 start in this weekend's Grand Slam Triangle Classic. The Pacers beat New York University, 5-1, followed by a 15-8 win that spilled into Sunday morning against the McDaniel College Green Terror.

Game One: William Peace 5, New York U. 1
Brittany Propri hit her fourth home run of the year, a towering two-run shot to dead center in the bottom of the first, which ended up being enough for starting pitcher Morgan Farmer.

Farmer (5-1) earned her fifth win of the year and went the distance for the fourth time this season, holding NYU to one run on seven hits and a career high eight strikeouts.

Lindsey Wiggins was the only Pacer with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-3 and knocked in a pair. Shay Poteat and Morgan Bryant both singled and scored on Wiggins RBI single in the fourth. Farmer also added a sacrifice fly in the third that brought Kacy Haithcock home after she reached base on a walk.

Karissa Zubulake (0-1) was pinned with the loss, giving up five runs on three hits, five walks and a strikeout in 3.1 innings of work. Olivia Mould tossed a scoreless 2.2 innings in relief.

Molly Webber finished 2-for-3 and scored the Bobcats' lone run in the top of the second. Sage Scheiwiller also went 2-for-3 at the dish.

Game Two: William Peace 15, McDaniel 8
After collecting only five hits in their 5-1 win against NYU, the Pacers (8-4) racked up a season high 17 hits on their way to a 15-8 win over McDaniel.

WPU scored three runs in the first, second and fourth innings for a 9-3 lead. McDaniel (0-2) cut it 10-8 after six, but the Pacers pulled away with a five run top of the seventh.

Five different Pacers notched three hits. Poteat went 3-for-5, scored twice and knocked in five runs thanks to a three-run frozen rope in the seventh for her second homer of the season. Wiggins went 3-for-4, scored four runs, and blasted her fourth dinger of the year in the second. Caroline Womble finished 3-for-3 with two walks, four runs and a run batted in. BPropri went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Haithcock also went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

Kelsey Durham (2-3) earned the win, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Farmer picked up her first save of the season, tossing the final two-and-two-thirds, holding McDaniel to only one hit and two runs.
