Softball Slugs Their Way Past the Spartans

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University softball team is off to a quick 4-0 start this season after taking a pair of slugfests from Case Western Reserve University Saturday afternoon. The Pacers won game one, 12-8, followed by an 11-9 win in game two.

Game One: William Peace 12, Case Western Reserve 8
Down 3-0, WPU tied the game in the bottom of the third and cancelled out a four-run top of the fourth for Case Western Reserve with a four-run bottom half of the inning.  The Pacers kept it rolling with three runs in the fifth and two more in sixth on their way to their third win of the season.

Lindsey Wiggins, Morgan Bryant and Brittany Propri all went deep for the Pacers. Wiggins hit a solo shot in the third and finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and two RBIs. Bryant went 2-for-3, scored a pair and drove herself in with a solo shot to lead off the fourth.  Propri scored three runs and hit her second three-run dinger of the season, which also came in the fourth. Caroline Womble, Morgan Farmer and Kelsey Durham added two hits apiece. Womble scored two runs and drove in another, while Farmer drove in three.

Farmer also picked up the win in the circling improving to 2-0. It was Farmer's second complete-game effort, as she allowed eight runs (five earned), on eight hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

The Spartans hit three home runs of their own. Grace Tritchler hit a two-run bomb in the first for her only hit of the game. Nicole Doyle homered in the fourth, and Alex Favazza hit a three-run shot in the fourth. Kristen Klemmer went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.

Annie Wennerberg started for Case Western Reserve but didn't factor into the decision.  Lindsey Robinson was pinned with the loss, giving up two runs without allowing a hit. Robinsons retired one batter, walked two and plunked three Pacers in the fifth.

Game Two: William Peace 11, Case Western Reserve 9 (F/5)
After recording 13 hits in game one, the Pacers racked up 15 in a five-inning game shortened due to darkness.  WPU fell behind 9-2 before batting around for a seven-run bottom of the third. They added two more in the fifth before it was called.
