WPU Women Drop Season Finale to Greensboro

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team closed out the regular season against Greensboro College Saturday afternoon. The Pacers got off to a promising start but the Pride pulled away in the second half for a 95-65 win.

The Pacers end the season a disappointing 7-18 overall with a 1-15 mark in the USA South, but they seem to be heading in the right direction with an encouraging young crop of talent returning next year. WPU graduates only one Senior, Alexis Armstrong, who was recognized before the game.

"Early on I thought we played really well. We ran our offense and hit some shots, but then we have times during games where we don't score, which is what happened during the second quarter," said Head Coach Kelly Johnson. "A lot of our struggles this year have to do with the fact that we're a young team, but we shouldn't be a young team next year."

There were five ties and seven lead changes in a competitive first 14 minutes, but the Pacers went into halftime down 16 (47-31) after Greensboro closed the second quarter on a 20-4 tear. The Pride didn't miss a beat on the other side of the break, putting the game out of reach with an 11-0 run to start the third.

WPU shot 53.3% (8-of-15) from the field in the first quarter but struggled to find their stroke the rest of the way. The Pacers finished the game at a 33.8% clip (22-of-65), while Greensboro went 32-of-63 (50.8%) from the field and drained 12 of their 27 shots from beyond the arc (44.4%). The Pride also pounded the Pacers on the glass, 54-28.

Susannah Sykes led the Pacers with 16 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Tenae McKinzie added nine points, one rebound, four assists and two steals.  DeJah Cheatham also had nine points, one rebound, one assist and a steal. Cassidy Clark did a bit of everything with eight points, six boards and four assists.

Greensboro (14-9, 10-4 USAS) put five players in double figures. Bryanna Stanton scored 15 to go along with a rebound and two steals. Monica Smalls registered 14 points, three rebounds and four blocks. Alexis Hite contributed 11 points, three boards, five assists, one block and a steal.
