WPU Baseball Bested by Guilford

CARY, NC – The William Peace University baseball team was back at home Wednesday afternoon against the Quakers of Guilford College. It was a one-run game after three, but the Pacers didn't record a hit after the fourth inning on their way to an 11-2 loss.

After allowing three runs in the top of the third, two of which were unearned, WPU (1-3) bounced back to make it 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Proctor and Trey Hogan both singled and scored, but the bats went as cold as the temperatures they were playing in.

The Pacers were held hitless from the fifth inning on, while the Quakers (2-1) plated four runs in the fifth, three in the seventh and another in the eighth. Hogan and Alex Scott both went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Proctor and Will Cunningham were the only other Pacers to reach safely with a hit.

Braxton Lamm (0-1) started on the bump and was pinned with the loss. While his defense didn't do him any favors, Lamm's struggles to find the strike zone didn't help much either. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits, two strikeouts and six walks in 4.1 innings of work before giving way to lefty Kyle Vincent

Chase Mitchell (1-0) earned the win for Guilford in relief of starter Darin Salter, who worked the first three innings for the Quakers. Mitchell tossed the next three innings, silencing the Pacers with one hit and three strikeouts.

Guilford notched 11 hits during the game. Josh Shepherd had himself a day, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and to runs scored. Leadoff man Jacob Roberts also recorded three hits, drove in a run and scored another.

The WPU baseball team will be back at the USA Baseball National Training Complex for games five and six of their 16-game home stand to start the season. The Pacers host Lynchburg Saturday at 1:00 p.m. They'll face Castleton University Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
