Volleyball Goes 2-0 vs. Huntingdon, LaGrange

DANVILLE, VA – The William Peace University volleyball team was back on the road Saturday afternoon for a pair of USA South matches at Averett University. The Pacers went 2-0 on the day with a 3-1 win over Huntingdon followed by a 3-0 win against LaGrange.

The Pacers (14-5, 5-2 USAS) came out with a convincing 25-13 opening set win to start the day against Huntingdon. The Hawks bounced back in the second, 25-23, but WPU closed it out with 25-23 and 25-18 wins in the third and fourth sets.

WPU hit .319 as a team and held a 9-1 advantage in blocks led by Tempestt Frazier, who finished with 14 kills at a scorching .737 clip, five block assists and a block solo.  Laura Bland recorded a double-double of 13 kills, 14 digs, two block assists and a service ace, while Mya Parks added 13 more kills, six digs and three block assists. Liana Solomon also notched a double-double with 32 assists, 11 digs, seven kills, four service aces and a block assist.

Bria Rochelle and Audrianna Hargitt paced the Hawks (6-14, 2-4 USAS) attack with 11 kills apiece.

The Pacers kept their momentum rolling into the second match of the day against LaGrange, finishing the Panthers off in three by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-19.  

WPU continued to swing efficiently, hitting .337 as a team. The Pacers were also helped in large part by 13 service aces to only one for LaGrange (12-8, 2-4 USAS).

Frazier continued her hot hitting with 10 kills on only 14 swings and five more block assists. Frazier didn't commit a single attacking error the entire day and leads the USA South with a hitting percentage of .340 so far this season. Bland tallied 10 more kills, five digs, three service aces and three block assists. Parks finished with nine kills, five digs, four service aces and a block assist, while Solomon racked up 34 assists, four digs and two service aces.

Maggie Ivester led the way for LaGrange with a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs.

The WPU volleyball team is back in Danville for two more USA South matches tomorrow. The Pacers start the day at noon against Agnes Scott and close out the weekend against Piedmont at 2:00 p.m.
