RALEIGH, NC – Following a par of home wins over the weekend, the William Peace University volleyball team was back at the Hermann Athletic Center on Wednesday, hosting Division II Saint Augustine's University. The Pacers swept St. Aug's at their place last week, but the Falcons bounced back to even the series in five sets: 25-22, 12-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9.
WPU evened the score at 12 after falling behind early in the first. The Pacers jumped ahead, 22-21, but St. Aug's used a 4-0 spurt to win the opening set, 25-21. After a sluggish start, WPU (6-3) came out in the second on an absolute roll. They led by as many as 15 points (23-8) and pulled even with the Falcons, 25-21.
St. Aug's (4-3) battled back though and recaptured the momentum in the third. Keyed by a 7-0 swing, the Falcons went on to a comfortable, 25-19 win. The Pacers held on to take the fourth set, 25-23, but they dug themselves a hole they couldn't climb out of in the fifth to lose, 15-9.
Laura Bland registered a match high and season high 14 kills to go along with four digs and a block assist, while
Liana Solomon came in with 12 kills, 15 assists, eight digs, a pair of service aces and a block assist. Kennedy Paine also added a team high 19 assists with eight digs and three service aces.
Carson Williams and
Maddie Irvin both reached double figure digs with 14 and 10, respectively.
For St. Augustine's, Olivia Porter led the way with 14 kills, 19 digs, three service aces and a pair of block assists.
The WPU Volleyball team will be back in action at the Hermann Athletic Center this Saturday as they kick off USA South conference play. The Pacers face Piedmont at 4:00 p.m. followed by NC Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.,
