SWANNANOA, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team hit the road Sunday, traveling to take on the Owls of Warren Wilson College. After suffering a pair of 2-0 losses the previous two seasons against the Owls, the Pacers earned a 2-2 draw in double-overtime Sunday afternoon.
"It was a great game…both teams battled back-and-forth. We had numerous opportunities in the second half but just weren't able to finish," said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "We would have loved to come away with a win, but overall, very pleased with our effort and the way we played today."
WPU (1-2-1) was the beneficiary of a Warren Wilson own goal and went up 1-0 early on, but the Owls (3-1-1) tied things up before the half on a corner kick, as the six-foot tall Ashleigh Richter went up above everyone for the header.
The Pacers took a 2-1 lead on the other side of the break. Freshman
Alyssa Gasperini slid a ball to Senior
Mari Mitterling who got loose behind the defense and buried it home for her first goal of the season. It was the second assist of the season for Gasperini. Despite a solid performance from WPU's backline, Bianco Canizio came through with the equalizer for Warren Wilson.
The WPU women's soccer team has one more tune up before heading into conference play next weekend. The Pacers travel to face Emory & Henry on Wednesday, September 16 at 5:00 p.m.
