CARY, NC - The William Peace women's soccer team opened their season Tuesday night against Johnson & Wales, as the Pacers took 31 shots (17 on target) and held the Wildcats to only one, on their way to a dominant, 6-1 win.
Senior
Anna Tew capped off the scoring for WPU in the 83rd minute, catching the keeper off her line and lofting it from well beyond the 18 yard box, but it was a trio of freshman that led the Pacers' attack.
Freshman
Alyssa Gasperini scored the first and second goals of her collegiate career, striking first in the 25th minute with the assistance of junior
Amelia Melching. Junior
Amber Arnold connected with Gasperini in the 42nd minute, sending a long ball through the air to Gasperini, who was able to sneak in behind the JWU defense.
Gasperini also added an assist in the 35th minute, finding freshman
Janae Mays for her first career goal as a Pacer. Freshman Lauraen Lane scored the first collegiate goal of her career, as Mays found her in the 40th minute. Sophomore
Ashley Johnson added one more for good measure with 25 seconds left in the first, giving the Pacers a 5-0 lead at the half.
The Wildcats (0-2) finally broke through in the 66th minute, but it was far too little, too late. Danielle Doyle put it in the back of the net with the helpf of Larissa Barnes.
The WPU women's soccer team will be back in action this Friday at 7:00 p.m., traveling to take on ODAC opponent Guilford College for their first road test of the season
