WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The William Peace Softball team traveled to Salem College this afternoon, where they lost game one, 3-2, followed by a six-inning, 12-4 loss in game two.
Game One: Salem 3, William Peace 2 – 8 innings
WPU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, as Brandi Stamey and Morgan Farmer led the inning off with back-to-back solo shots. Salem pushed a run across in their next two at-bats though to even the score.
The Pacers left the bases loaded in the sixth and didn't manage to put anyone on base the final two frames, with the exception of the automatic runner on second to start every inning after the seventh.
Hannah Ogle started at second for Salem in the eighth and scored on Brianna Morris' walk-off single.
Farmer started in the circle and gave up two runs on six hits in five innings pitched, while Lauren Martin (2-1) was pinned with an unfortunate loss, allowing only one unearned run in two innings plus of work.
At the plate, Stamey and Farmer both recorded a pair of hits to go along with a run knocked in and a run scored. Carolne Womble, Heather McLean and Morgan Bryant also contributed one hit apiece.
Lauryn Smith (5-4) picked up the win for Salem, surrendering only two hits in a scoreless four innings of relief. Morris went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Kierston Garner went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Game Two: Salem 12, William Peace 4 – 6 innings
WPU (10-9-1) jumped out to another 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two. Wiggins singled with one away, advanced to second on Womble's sacrifice bunt and then scored on another RBI hit from Stamey. Farmer connected for another two-out RBI hit, as she doubled home Stamey.
Salem (9-9-2) scored four unearned runs in the bottom half of the third thanks to three errors committed by the Pacers. WPU tied the game with two more runs in the fourth, but the Spirit scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and put an early end to the game with four in the sixth.
Heather Dindinger (3-4) was tacked with the loss but didn't get much help behind her, as the Pacers committed six errors. Dindinger gave up five runs, only of which were earned, in four innings pitched.
Wiggins went 2-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored at the plate. Dindinger tried to help her own cause, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Morris (4-4) started for Salem and got the win, allowing four runs on six hits in three innings of work. The Spirts' offense racked up 16 hits, with three different players registering three hits.
The WPU Softball Team will be back in action this weekend, as they travel to Maryville on Friday and host Mary Baldwin on Sunday.
