WPU Baseball Bounced Twice in Saturday Double-Dip vs. NC Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The William Peace baseball team lost both games of their series opening double-header against NC Wesleyan on Saturday. The Pacers fell in game one, 5-1, followed by a 4-3 defeat in the second game.

Game One:  NC Wesleyan 5, William Peace 1

After four scoreless innings, Wesleyan put a run across in the fourth and then three more in the fifth to go ahead, 4-0. WPU got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth but couldn't draw any closer. JT Howington was plunked and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Trey Hogan.

The Pacers were out-hit, 12-6, with Tyler Klinedinst and Greg Chauvin both going 2-for-4 at the plate to lead WPU. Wes Dumford (0-2) pitched well but was pinned with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, a walk and three strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Ryan Grant (1-2) earned the win for Wesleyan, giving up a run on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts in six innings pitched. Ciro Norzagaray paced the Bishop's lineup with a 2-for-3 game to go along with an RBI and a run scored. Brad Guengerich also added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Game Two: NC Wesleyan 4, William Peace 3

WPU (0-8, 0-8 USAS) jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the second. JT Howington led off with a single to left, and then Chris Stein doubled to right center, putting ducks on the pond at second and third. Dillon Roberts plated Howington with a sac fly. Stein scored on an RBI single the other way from Trevor Nanney.

Wesleyan (2-4, 2-3 USAS) scored in the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 game, but the Pacers stretched their lead back to a pair a couple innings later.   Howington tripled to lead off the sixth and came home on Roberts' groundout.

The Bishops scored two in the eighth though and another in the ninth to take their first lead of the game.  WPU had runners on second and third with only one down in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't push them across.

Coleman Greene got the start but didn't factor into the decision for the Pacers. Greene gave up one run on five hits, three walks and a strikeout in five innings of work. Chase Roupp pitched the ninth and was tacked with the loss.

Howington led the Pacers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Nanny also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

George Moore (1-1) got the win, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, while Luis Palencia chipped in with two hits.
