ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Christian Neal (1-1) threw a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out a program record 10 batters, as the William Peace Baseball Team took down North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-2, recording their first win of the season and first-ever win in the USA South.
WPU (1-8, 1-8 USAS) struck first, scoring two in the second. JT Howington was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then Chris Stein walked to put runners on first and second. Matt Proctor doubled Howington home, and then Stein came across to score as Wesleyan's right fielder threw it away.
NC Wesleyan (2-5, 2-4 USAS) got one back in the fourth, but the Pacers put their lead back to two with a run in the sixth. Stein singled home Greg Chauvin, who led the inning off with a single up the middle.
The Pacers added two more in their next at bat, as Trey Hogan and Trey Hathaway both singled to get things started in the seventh. After Josh Clark walked to juice the bases, Howington came through with a base knock to center for a pair of RBI, plating Hogan and Hathway.
The Bishops loaded the bases in the ninth, but Neal induced the 6-4-3 double play and appropriately struck out the next batter to end the game.
At the plate, Proctor and Hogan collected two hits apiece. Proctor went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Hogan went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Howington went 1-for-3 with the big two RBI double and also scored a run.
Ciro Norzagaray (0-1) was pinned with the loss for Wesleyan. James Lovett had a 3-for-4 day at the plate. James Kornegay went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
WPU will be back in action for a home non-conference game against Saint Andrews University Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
