WPU Women's Basketball Falls to Ferrum

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace women's basketball team fell to Ferrum on Sunday, 71-58.

Ferrum took an 8-0 lead less than four minutes in, until Derrica Jones finally broke the scoring drought at the 14:30 mark. Brittany Boykin converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way off a Panthers turnover, cutting the  lead to two (8-6) with 13:32 to go in the first.

WPU took a 9-8 lead at the 12:25 mark on a three pointer from Krystal Williams, and Jones capped an 11-0 run for a three point lead, but Ferrum drained three straight from deep for a 9-0 spurt and a six point (17-11) advantage.

An 8-0 swing in favor of WPU put them back on top by two (19-17) but another Ferrum triple gave them a one point (20-19) edge at the 5:39 mark.  The Panthers hit two more triples to close out the half and went 7-of-14 from three-point range for an eight point (31-23) lead at the break.

The Pacers never managed to get it closer than their eight point halftime deficit in the second, as Ferrum went on to win, 58-40.

WPU struggled to make shots in the second half and finished the game shooting 14-of-57 (24.6%). The Panthers didn't shoot particularly well from the field, but they went 11-of-26 (42.3%) from the bonushpere against the Pacer's 2-3 zone and out-rebounded WPU, 42-33.

"I thought we did a better job in the second half of running them off the three-point line," said head coach Kelly Johnson. "We played some good defense but we just couldn't score. We don't take bad shots, but we just have to hit some open looks."

Williams led the Pacers with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jones had nine points, nine rebounds, a pair of assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Ka'la Jordan scored eight to go along with four boards, an assist and two steals. Boykin finished with seven points, three assists, and two steals.

For Ferrum, Jacole Hairston and Lindsay Martin both made four three-pointers, as Hairston finished with a game high 16 points, six rebounds, an assist, three steals, and a blocked shot. Martin registered 12 points, three boards, and five assists.

The WPU women's basketball team closes their season on Wednesday, hosting Meredith at 7:00 p.m., where they'll honor Jones, Williams, and Kate McHale for senior night.
