RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace women's basketball team put a halt to their four-game skid this afternoon, as the Pacers beat the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, 71-59.
WPU (7-14, 4-11 USAS) trailed by six (8-2) five minutes in, but back-to-back threes from Ka'la Jordan and Zhana Gooden put them in front, 11-8, capping a 9-0 run with 12:18 left in the first. The Pacers went 9-of-14 to close the half, and went into the locker room with a 35-24 lead.
Mary Baldwin (0-21, 0-15 USAS) erased their 11-point halftime deficit by the 11:56 mark, using an 11-0 spurt to tie the game at 43. A 6-0 swing in favor of WPU pushed their lead back to six, but the Squirrels responded with a 6-0 swing of their own, taking a one point (55-54) edge with five minutes to play.
Jordan hit a big three to retake the lead though, and the Pacers took over from there. An 11-0 run put them up by (69-57), which is what they went on to win by.
The Pacers only shot 34.9% (22-of-63) but, they turned 19 Mary Baldwin turnovers into 19 points at the other end and out-rebounded the squirrels, 43-37. WPU also made five more three-pointers than Mary Baldwin did, going 7-of-22 (31.8%), and scored 10 additional points at the charity stripe despite only shooting 58.8% (20-of-34).
Three Pacers scored in double-figures led by 21 points, 11 rebounds and two assists from Derrica Jones. Jordan had 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Alexis Armstrong added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
For Mary Baldwin, Kaybria Johnson was the high scorer in the game with 23 points, three rebounds, an assist and two steals. Teanna Peavy had eight points, 13 rebounds, an assist and three steals.
WPU Women's Basketball will be back in action tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Ferrum.
